Enter an artists name and get the artist's bio, album info, and similar artist info. Also search for Mp3's to play or download, and get links to the artist's page on Last.fm, Pandora etc.

A while back Last.fm released a command line tool to retrieve metadata for an arbitrary mp3 from their new fingerprint database. I tried it yesterday and it seemed way better than MusicBrainz. So, as a person with a lot of random mp3s, I cooked up a script for retagging entire folders of songs.

So, I'm trying my hand at Cocoa, namely RubyCocoa. Objective-C is a bit out of my grasp right now. If I start needing big performance boosts, I'll go that route. In the meantime, writing RubyCocoa apps is insanely fun. I wrote this basic tagger in 2 days (roughly 6 hours) and it works pretty well! If you plan on trying out this app, create a small playlist with the name 'lastfmtagger' and put a few albums in there.

You are supposed to be able to listen to an artist and read their Wikipedia entry (if one exists) at the same time. I say supposed to, because when I tried it I was only able to get it to play music similar to the artist.

Last.fm looks like a great way to sample new music and introduce friends to bands that you like. In that sense, Last.fm could easily grow into a "YouTube for music," making it the preferred (legal) way to link up full songs for others to hear

The veteran Scrobblers amongst you will probably remember our “moderation system” – this was a user-voting system that let you propose and merge artists, ultimately fixing misspelled artists by creating aliases to the correct version. We are planning to bring this back in a big way, addressing not only artists, but albums and tracks too. We don’t want to have to vote on the really obvious stuff (“01 – Radiohead”), so we are going to do as much as possible automatically, with various algorithms and data mining tricks. The entries we can’t be 100% sure about, and the remaining stuff, will again be thrown open to a public vote. Phase 1 is now underway with the first public “beta” release of our new fingerprinting technology. This will mature into a nice sexy (free) API that lets you grab clean metadata based on an audio fingerprint. For now, all that it does is send the fingerprint data to bootstrap the moderation system. This doesn’t change any MP3 files on your computer. It does send useful fingerprint data to our moderation system so we can get the ball rolling. If you have a big MP3 collection, it will take a while… Thankfully it remembers where it got to, so you don’t have to do it all in one session.
