Le jour de Pâques 1984, un grand maître s’est éteint à l’age de quatre-vingt-douze ans, après avoir réalisé tous ses rêves de budoka.

Yushinkan was the dojo of Nakayama Hakudo (1873-1958) in Tokyo. Nakayama had a varied and rich budo life, achieving hanshi in all three arts promoted by the modern ZNKR as well as being a shindo munen-ryu swordsman amongst other things. Its impossible to do a full bio of the man here, so I will leave that for another time, instead concentrating on the content of this article.

NAKAYAMA Hakudo est né dans la ville de Kanazawa (Préfecture d'Ishikawa) en 1870 et est décédé en 1959 à l'âge de 89 ans. Budoka d'exception, il fut le seul à recevoir de la "All Japan Kendo Federation" la double distinction de judan (10 ème degré) et de hanshi (maître instructeur) en kendo, iaido et jodo. De plus, il détenait une licence d'intructeur en Shinto Muso Ryu et un Menkyo Kaiden en Shindo Munen Ryu (7 ème Soke). Il fut également le dernier chef de file incontesté (16 ème Soke) de la branche Shimomura-Ha de Hasegawa Eishin Ryu (également appelée Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu).

I first met Iwata Sensei in England in August 2000. I found him to be a very interesting teacher with a strong personality. He is very knowledgeable in iaido and it's history, and is a strict sensei. I therefore wanted to do an interview to get some basic background information about this strong teacher. My friend Mr. Neil Kemp, from Britain, has trained under Iwata Sensei for years and has visited and trained in Japan many times with other senior students. He was going to Japan in November 2001 to once again learn from Iwata Sensei so I sent my questions to him and he kindly asked my questions and even expanded on them. In May 2002 Neil again visited Japan and asked some additional questions as I wished to focus further on some parts. So we got a long story, but I think you will be interested in it.

On trouve dans « lai », la notion d'ÊTRE (I, de Iru) et d'HARMONIE (Ai), au sens de« mettre son esprit en harmonie avec celui de l'adversaire », une orientation qui rappelle celle de l'Aikido. La maîtrise de l'arme est la maîtrise de l'esprit. L'art du lai est, loin de l'utilitarisme premier de la technique nécessaire sur un champ de bataille, l'apprentissage de l'abandon de l'ego possessif, inhibiteur et créateur d'illusion. Dans l'art du lai, on coupe d'abord « un autre soi-même » et la pureté du mental comme des attitudes et mouvements rejoint la démarche du Bouddhisme Zen.
