NAS Adapter from Addonics

by oseres (via)
The Addonics NAS Adapter is a convenient and economical solution for adding any USB storage devices onto your LAN (Local Area Network). Once on the network, the USB storage can be shared by any network user, just like an ordinary NAS device. When use in conjunction with Addonics Storage Towers or Storage Racks, a Multi-Tera bytes storage with various RAID capabilities can be instantly added to the LAN. With the NAS adapter, you can custom build you own NAS appliance with RAID capability and plenty of storage expansion using Addonics family of Drive Enclosures, Port Multipliers, and IO converters. Come built-in with a USB 2.0/1.1 connection and a fast Ethernet 10/100Mbps connection, the NAS adapter supports both SMB (Server Message Block) and the open source Samba network protocols, allowing for cross-platform access of all shared data for most versions of Windows, Mac OS X, and various Linux distributions. For remote users who are not connected over the LAN, the NAS Adapter provides FTP access for up to 8 simultaneous users anywhere in the world with an internet connection. In addition, the NAS adapter can also be used as a print server or as a Bit-Torrent downloading appliance.

Openfiler — Openfiler Community

by camel
Openfiler is a powerful, intuitive browser-based network storage software distribution. Openfiler ScreenshotsOpenfiler delivers file-based Network Attached Storage and block-based Storage Area Networking in a single framework. Openfiler is built on the rPath Linux metadistribution and is distributed as a stand-alone Linux distribution. The entire software stack interfaces with third-party software that is all open source. File-based networking protocols supported by Openfiler include: NFS, SMB/CIFS, HTTP/WebDAV and FTP. Network directories supported by Openfiler include NIS, LDAP (with support for SMB/CIFS encrypted passwords), Active Directory (in native and mixed modes) and Hesiod. Authentication protocols include Kerberos 5. Openfiler includes support for volume-based partitioning, iSCSI (target and initiator), scheduled snapshots, resource quota, and a single unified interface for share management which makes allocating shares for various network file-system protocols a breeze.

Setting Up An iSCSI Environment On Linux | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

Setting Up An iSCSI Environment On Linux Nowadays, the iSCSI technology is quite popular in the storage world. This article shows an iSCSI demo environment which consists of one Debian Linux host and one Netapp Filer. We try to show the most important features of this protocol. 1. What is iSCSI? It is a network storage protocol above TCP/IP. This protocol encapsulates SCSI data into TCP packets. iSCSI allows us to connect a host to a storage array via a simple Ethernet connection (tape drive). This solution is cheaper than the Fibre Channel SAN (Fibre channel HBAs and switches are expensive). From the host view the user sees the storage array LUNs like a local disks. iSCSI devices should not be confused with the NAS devices (for example NFS). The most important difference is that NFS volumes can be accessed by multiple hosts, but one iSCSI volume can by accessed by one host. It is similar to SCSIi protocol: usually only one host has access to one SCSI disk (the difference is the cluster enviroment). The iSCSI protocol is defined in the RFC3720 document by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force).
