'Pinch' connects multiple smartphones and tablets together to make a display | The Verge

by sbrothier
Not content with synchronizing your phones to make one giant speaker? Researchers at the Tokyo University of Technology have developed "Pinch," an interface that lets you connect multiple devices together to form a giant disjointed display. Although the technology behind the interface remains a mystery — described only as a Wi-Fi based system — a video posted by DigInfo TV shows Pinch in action. To connect two devices, a user simply needs to pinch two adjacent screens together. The screens can be linked together in whatever alignment you choose, as the position and screen size of each display is communicated on a successful pinch. It's not the first time developers have managed to link together multiple smartphone displays, but this is definitely the slickest interface we've seen.

Kill The Hamburger Button | TechCrunch

by sbrothier
That little three-lined button is the devil. Whether you call it a side menu, navigation drawer, or a hamburger, hiding your features off-screen behind a nondescript icon in the corner is usually a poor mobile design choice. Interaction theory, A/B tests, and the evolution of some of the top apps in the world all support the same thesis: The hamburger button is bad for engagement, and you should probably replace it with a tab bar or other navigation scheme.

Web design as troll: how The Verge Fanboys piece taunted the internet | Vox Product Blog

by sbrothier
How do you speak to a group of extremely passionate people? What kind of design would speak to them? When Joshua Topolsky approached us about creating three different layouts in the style of three mobile UI’s we were initially torn. Something about mimicking the UI of phones didn’t feel original. But more importantly, it presented a problem of presentation. There was an inherent a UX problem to solve: do you offer presentation options or do you trick the user? We decided to troll.

Motion Ui Design Principles — Beyond Kinetic

by sbrothier
This blog is a quick look at some simple Ui motion design principles.  There isn’t too much documented about this area of mobile ui design and I thought there would be some value in expressing my views.   From what is documented already I urge anyone interested in ui motion to check out Pasquale D’Silva http://psql.me/ and Johannes Tonollo’s meaningful transitions http://www.ui-transitions.com/#home.

The minimal-ui meta tag in iOS 7.1 | Adventures (in code)

iOS7 brings us yet another meta tag to use – minimal-ui. You might be able to guess what it does – it hides the majority of the browser chrome when you load, much like when you scroll:

How the Float Label Pattern Started

by sbrothier
I first had the idea for a new input pattern back in August. The idea was simple enough - animate placeholder text to show an icon beside the input so you don't lose your context. I've been doing 99% mobile work for the past 2 years and little things like this can really add up. I wanted a solution that saved space, looked clean and clear, but didn't forego usability.
