(via)The "open" command keeps a database of applications and the file types they know how to open, and when asked to open a file will use the appropriate application to do so. If one can't be found, or more than one is found, the user is asked to help out. With "open", you can configure all applications that use external viewers to just use "open", and thus only have to deal with each file type once.
