This morning we became aware of a Twitter campaign run from the website http://fixoutlook.org. This campaign is intended to provide Microsoft with feedback about our decision to continue to use Microsoft Word for composing and displaying e-mail in the upcoming release of Microsoft Outlook 2010. The Email Standards Project, which developed the website that promotes the current Twitter campaign, is backed by the maker of “email marketing campaign” software.

Starting on or about the third week of April, users still running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 will get will get a notification through Automatic Update about IE8. This rollout will start with a narrow audience and expand over time to the entire user base. On Windows XP and Server 2003, the update will be High-Priority. On Windows Vista and Server 2008 it will be Important. IE8 will not automatically install on machines. Users must opt-in to install IE8. Users will see a Welcome screen that offers choices: Ask later, install now, or don’t install.

L'intégration de deux moteurs de rendu devrait compter parmi les nouveautés du navigateur. Le premier est celui d'IE6 et IE 7, qui est très orienté vers les technologies Microsoft et ne respecte pas tous les standards du web. Le deuxième a en revanche passé avec succès le test Acid 2 du Web Standards Project (WASP), signifiant qu'il est davantage compatible avec les dernières normes du web.

L'idée est la suivante : les navigateurs doivent pouvoir afficher les anciennes pages qui n'ont pas été conçues pour des navigateurs modernes respectueux des standards, tout en étant compatible avec les nouvelles pages, qui tirent parti des standards. Comment faire ? La proposition de Microsoft est de rajouter un élément meta, qui donnerait quelque chose comme :

Microsoft has decided to use Word to render HTML in Outlook 2007. And comparing the CSS support of Word to that of Internet Explorer (which is what Outlook used to use) is like comparing IE 4 to Firefox 2. In other words, it is really lousy.

Internet Explorer interprète les dimensions CSS différemment des autres navigateurs, ou plutôt interprétait... Contrairement à ce que laissent supposer certains articles et propos de designers "chevronnés" qui n’en démordent pas, Internet Explorer 6 de Microsoft interprète les dimensions CSS des pages html et xhml valides de la même manière que les autres navigateurs de même génération.
Alors pourquoi cette confusion ?
